Unique museum of the Marco Polo sheep was opened in Murghab

Now foreign tourists and residents of our country have an opportunity to learn more about one of the valuable animal species of Tajikistan.

During the recent visit of the Founder of Peace and National Unity - Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon, to the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region, a new administrative building, serving as the Department for the Environmental Protection of the Murghab district was opened. Workrooms equipped with modern technology are located on the second floor, a hotel with all modern services is on the third floor.

The first of its kind museum of Marco Polo sheep in Tajikistan occupies the entire first floor of the new building. It is expected that the museum will become one of the most widely visited tourist sites and will allow tourists to show the uniqueness of the wild nature in Murghab. It presents exhibits of various rare and endangered species of animals inhabiting these parts. Visitors to the museum can also see stunning paintings depicting valuable species of local fauna and flora.

TV monitors installed in the museum allow demonstrating of video about rare and endangered species of animals of the Murghab district, in particular, about the Marco Polo sheep.

With support of the UNDP-GEF initiative on snow leopard ecosystem conservation, an environmental map of Murghab has been prepared, with identification of habitats for rare endangered plant and animal species, including snow leopards and mountain ungulates, designed information videos on the snow leopard and its prey.

The leaders and employees of the museum are sure that such an initiative, supported by the government, will help to raise awareness on the unique nature of the country, both Tajik people and foreign tourists, and will increase tourist attraction of the Murgab district.

"Snow leopard - national treasure of Tajikistan"

The author tried to comprehensively explain a value of the snow leopard for both wildlife and people. The brochure describes biological and behavioral characteristics of a rare predator, its habitats, main factors threatening its population, international and national initiatives to preserve it, legends and real cases of snow leopard and villagers meetings in the Pamir and more. According to the author, he sought to change the image of a rare predator in the eyes of an audience that has a negative attitude towards the snow leopard, or knows very little about it, in order to understand how important it is for wildlife.

The actions implemented by the project over the past quarter have made it possible to achieve significant results in improving the technical capabilities of specially protected areas’ staff and their skills in monitoring, to prepare a rationale for initiating practical actions to restore degraded pastures and forests, to increase to some extent the knowledge of local communities about the snow leopard and cause interest in its preservation, to form communication and the basis for cross-border cooperation.
