"Building a common future for our lives"

On May 21, 2022, a conference dedicated to the International Day of Biological Diversity, which is celebrated annually on May 22 on the initiative of the Convention on Biological Diversity, was held in Dushanbe on the initiative of the National Biodiversity and Biosafety Center of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, as the authorized body for the implementation of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity. Every year, the Convention on Biological Diversity celebrates Biodiversity Day in accordance with the goals and objectives and devotes a separate topic to it. 2022 was proclaimed the year of "Building a common future for our lives." This slogan was adopted by the Convention Secretariat in March 2022 at a technical meeting of the Parties to the Convention.

The Conference dedicated to the International Biodiversity Day was attended by representatives of the Environmental Protection Committee under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, representatives of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan and its specialized institutes, representatives of the Tajik Academy of Agricultural Sciences and its specialized institutes, representatives of the Forestry Agency and Specially Protected Natural Territories, representatives of the Tajik National University, Tajik Agrarian University, Tajik Pedagogical University, Khujand State University, representatives of public organizations and dehkan farms. In total, 70 people took part in the Conference.

First Deputy Chairman Kiyomzoda Zarafo delivered a welcoming speech on behalf of the Environmental Protection Committee under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, who in her speech highlighted Tajikistan's achievements in the field of conservation and sustainable management of biological diversity, the country's policy and the role of the Committee. Corresponding Member, Vice-President of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan Saidov Abdusattor welcomed the participants of the Conference on behalf, head of the National Center for Biodiversity and Biosafety Yatimov Olimjon spoke on behalf. In their speeches they noted the contribution of  Safarov N.M. to the development of biodiversity science in Tajikistan, the created platform and trained personnel in the field of biodiversity.

Then there were 3 presentations from the staff of the National Center for Biodiversity and Biosafety on the Convention on Biological Diversity, the structure and principles of international cooperation and the role of Tajikistan in the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity and the achievement of key global priorities and goals in the field; the 22 Action Initiative for the Protection of Biodiversity; and the Role of the National Strategy for the Conservation of Biological Diversity of Tajikistan in policy and the practice of sustainable development.

Also, representatives of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan, the Institute of Botany, Plant Physiology and Genetics, the Institute of Zoology and Parasitology named after E.N.Pavlovsky, representatives of the Faculty of Biology of the Tajik National University, representatives of public organizations and Dehkan farms made presentations. In general, the reports presented demonstrated the contribution of each department and organization to the implementation of measures for the conservation and sustainable use of the country's biodiversity, and presented the best practices and experience in sustainable biodiversity management and the role of local communities.

As a result of the Conference, a Conference Resolution was adopted, which fully reflected further steps and actions to achieve the goals and objectives set in the field of sustainable biodiversity management, reflecting the country's policy at both the national and international levels.
